Well, I've heard that it's a parody/comedy of the Japanese legal system, which most sources agree that more western cultures would see as horribly and unfairly biased towards the prosecution...even though the American version is set in um I think San Fran, that element is still there! So that's where some of the over the top stuff comes from, I think.

Also, it is just silly. |D
