Strikethrough '07: Final thoughts (?)

So it's over. Supposedly. The fandom journals and comms are all being reinstated, the people who only had profile problems are also being undeleted on the condition they change profiles to clarify things, and LJ is supposed to be back to normal.

Like I said in my previous entry, it's going to take a long time for Six Apart to restore the trust its LJ customers once had. This could have been handled 100% better with 1) research into the profiles and such - is it just a bizarre username, or is this person really into child porn? In what context are they listing this interest? Is it a journal of a real person or a fictional RP journal? and 2) warning for the people with questionable interests (i.e. profile problems). The people who were doing illegal activities on the comms and LJ accounts? Yeah, they needed to head out. Those who were simply misunderstood? Deserved to be warned well in advance of deletion. Six Apart really screwed up going off half-cocked like they did.

I have to concur with my more pessimistic friends: the Strikethrough may be over, but I think the repercussions will continue for a while to come. Here's hoping they won't be too killer.

In the meantime, I continue on with life.

Strikethrough '07: I SURVIVED

48 of the longest hours of my LiveJournal life are over. The Strikethrough has come to an end.

After talking to the rest of the media and doing God knows what, LJ finally responded here. I've got a couple things to say about it:

1) Thank God they saw their mistake (after how many pages of comments, again?) and are trying to fix it. I'd assume they'd restore all the communities and journals with the exception of the ones that actually came up as supporters of illegal activities.
2) It's going to take a long time for Six Apart and LiveJournal to recover from all this. They've broken the trust of their customer base, and it'll take quite a while to repair that. Even then, it'll never really be the same - I know I'm not the only one who's going to be paranoid enough to keep looking over my shoulder. It's not going to stop me from posting what I want when I want, but still, the paranoia continues.
3) I have never seen so many people from such different walks of life and opinions band together so quickly and cohesively over something. This, to me, has been absolutely amazing, and even though (pray to God and knock wood) something like this should never happen again, I'm hoping we can keep some semblance of that sense of community alive. That's the whole reason I have this icon - that sense of community and working together. That's why I joined Paixao, and hell - that's why I joined LJ in the first place. Community.

Strikethrough '07: The 7-Day Response

This is what, my fourth post today about this? XD;

This is the 7-Day Response, brought to us by the lovely

bookshop. I'd say the plan is well thought out, and I'm going to follow it to the best of my ability. I'm fairly certain even the local paper would be interested in this, and I think I can help in some of the different areas.

One of the things we need to do is come up with a good, coherent argument - something that's not going to devolve into HOMG PORNS AND TEH CHILDRENS :O!!!11!!ELEVENTY-ONE!! To that end, this post has been set up, and I know I for one am going to take a stab at writing that argument. I think one of the big points we need to focus on is context. Taking anything out of context is bound to make it awkward and potentially offensive, even more so when it's as serious and sensitive a subject as pedophelia and rape.

I'd like anybody who is confident in their writing skills to take a look here and see what they can do. I'd say we can make quite a difference here.

Also,

aphoneticcame up with a great idea: downgrading. It's all explained in her post here, but basically if people with plus accounts downgrade to basic accounts, the ads will no longer be shown and LJ takes a financial hit - a very effective course of action if performed en masse.

STRIKETHROUGH '07 - This? Is terrifying.

I have no idea if this is true or not, but if it is, it scares the bloody hell out of me.

Take a look.

Here's the letter - one of them - that was sent to Six Apart about the "problem." The problem for me, personally, is that I can understand where she's coming from in not wanting pedophiles on the internet where kids could potentially be; however, 1) she forgets about LJ's "only with parental permission are people under 13 here" policy, 2) she assumes there are "thousands" of pedophile sites on LJ, and 3) the banners at the bottom worry me. Man is judged by the company he keeps, after all, and this lady's part of the Redneck Army, the new confederacy, and all sorts of stuff I don't even want to think about. Is this really the kind of person we'd want behind any kind of campaign whatsoever?

...not really.

Strikethrough '07: Personal Thoughts

I figured it was my turn to comment on all the bannings that have been going on recently.

First of all, I think it's insane that it's gotten this far. We have my entire RP backed up, it's true, but I'm fearing for it anyway simply because quite a bit of RPs have fallen under the axe recently.

I headed to the Warriors for Innocene website and left them a nice comment:

I have absolutely no hope they'll listen to me, but at least it's a bit more...polite...than some of the other comments left on their site.

Also, quite a few people more eloquent than I have been covering this on their journals as well - additional information (as well as some snazzy banners) can be obtained there:

And above all, be careful if you decide to go to WFI's website. It's entirely possible they can track which site you came from and which site you go to when you leave, so be especially careful and go to noncommittal websites in between. (My personal neutral point is Google, just because it's my homepage and it makes life simple for me.) Be careful, be polite, and above all stand strong.
