Well, these were musings, and then they turned into a gigantic theory of monster-creating doom. For the win! :Db
I'm sitting in an office at work, COMPLETELY ALONE, and still believing that spider-crab-subway!stalker-beasties are going to eat my face and make me asplode.
Or at least, I was. Now it comes and goes. XDb
I'm putzing around my Flist, and evidently I missed something huge during the last scene of Cloverfield. During the very last shot, where Rob and Beth are talking to the camera and riding the ferris wheel at Coney Island, evidently something drops into the water behind them and the camera catches it on film. (I think I was still too busy shaking and freaking out all over
lynxgriffin to catch it.)
Also in this post, one of the commenters brings up Slusho, which evidently ties into the movie. Pre-release date, Wiki listed Slusho's website and 1-18-08.com as the official websites for the movie. I went to go look at the Slusho website, and the History is a pretty interesting read, especially this paragraph (about the drink creator's marine biologist son):
And one fateful day, he and his team discovered a deep-sea ingredient unique to anything else!!! While the team pondered miraculous ways to use it, Ganu had the best idea of all!! Because that night he had a dream - he was a tiny fish, and a whale came to him and told him to drink the new ingredient. And as he did drink lots and lots of the ingredient, Ganu grew from a small fish to an enormous whale!!! He woke up with tears, he knew he had found the magic ingredient Noriko had set off to find!
...yeah. Wow.
So the current theory stands in several forms. It all starts with the crash in the water (which was supposedly a satellite). The Japanese company that owns Slusho went to investigate the crash, found their super-special-secret ingredient, and either:
1. woke the monster up;
2. created the monster.
An interesting aside to either theory is the idea that Noriko, the founder of Slusho that went looking at sea for a secret ingredient and wasconveniently never heard from again, could be the monster herself. I'm particularly fond of this aspect. I can definitely see the monster being mutated from a human, especially with the whole "small fish becoming big whale" idea in the Slusho website. To me, it also explains where the SCS!SBs came from - it's a bit yick, but mutated eggs, anybody?
And, according to another commenter, Slusho was the company that hired Rob to be their vice president. If you remember, one of the guys at the party was wearing a Slusho shirt.
I have to say, I'm loving how all these different aspects of the story are coming together like this.
Finally, I checked 1-18-08.com again today, and...well. The picture at the forefront is the reason I'm not freaking about the SCS!SBs anymore, and if it is what I think it is, then it also offers some resolution to the movie.
THIS JUST IN: Hello, I'm being contradicted like mad here. XD Evidently, at the end of the credits, there's a sound clip that sounds like "help us" when played forwards and "it's still alive" or "still alive" when played backwards. (Which makes no sense, but hey, fan theories. What can I say.) This just slightly contradicts the pictures of DEAD WALLS OF FLESH AND RIBCAGES that the site is showing. That, and I didn't really hear any sound clip, and I did stay until the end of the credits.
I like fan theories. They make me smile. :D

The Slusho connection, but I think the monster connection too. I always thought they just sorta stole the monster idea and turned it into a movie.. which writers have been known to do xD

This is true. However, there's just so much stuff in this viral marketing campaign, I have to wonder just what the story is and how everything ties together.

*has nothing useful to add*

As for the Slusho stuff, there's a lot connected to it. There's that Jamie girl (she has a video series up on youtube where the special ingredient in it drives her crazy and something about her boyfriend was being held hostage by the drilling company). The Chuai drilling station was definitely destroyed by the monster, too, from the clip of it. And the drilling company owns Slusho.
The Slusho, I think, probably did mutate someone into the creature. Or something. there's definitely a connection. I remember an early theory was the monster preyed on people who drank it because it was the creature's natural food supply.
Also, the myspace pages of the characters are kinda interesting if you're curious. ALSO. 6 is apparently a very important number. Photos released on the 6th, the monster noise playing on the website exactly after 6 minutes, the can't have just 6 in the Slusho tagline. Plus, Rob was apparently going to be working with five other people on his project, making him number 6.
The photo of the dead monster body also looks like it's had a chunk bitten out of it. Aaaand. The picture proceeding it is definitely the military dumping chum into the water.
Also, http://cloverfieldclues.blogspot.com/ is a great site. And here's the prequel manga so far http://picasaweb.google.com/dennisacevedo/CloverfieldKishinMangaPart1 but it's hard to read.
So, uhm, that's everything I know 8D;;; hope it helps. Really this is the most fascinating movie in a while just because of the fun mystery to it.

Yeah, the picture is obviously not what I think it is. Plus, is it just me or do you see horns on the neckbite!monster? The monster that attacked Manhattan didn't have horns, at least not to my memory.
I have sooooooo much reading to do now. O_O
And I'm so glad I can discuss this with people. This is one of the biggest mysteries I've seen in a long time, and I'm loving every minute of it. On with the quest! \o/

Yeah, it does look like horns, huh? I remember somewhere the writers said the thing that attacked was actually a baby, too. It's been a while since they said it, so maybe that changed but who knows.
♥ I'm having a blast talking about Cloverfield theories so far. I hope they keep dropping clues. Obviously they have a lot of story to tell but the wait can be hard D:

Yeah, somebody on another thread threw the baby idea at me too...I don't know if that's true either, but if it was then I shudder to think what a grown one of those can do.
It also brings up the idea of multiple monsters and male and female ones, which makes me wonder if these theories do tie and the monsters are really mutated!Slusho!people. If they are...well. That's a whole new ball o' wax.
Oh, I love it. It's the same reason I read mystery novels - the thrill of discovery. Difference between this and the novels is, here there's theory discussion out the wazoo. It's great to be able to talk to people, put clues together, try to make some sense of something that seems to make no sense at all...you know what I'm talking about, you're doing it too. XD
I seriously doubt they'll leave the story untold. Just look at the box office figures - enough people are interested in this movie and in the story around it that they'll most likely keep the story going, maybe even put out another movie at some point. I don't know, but I'm looking forward to it. :3

I looove how many theories this movie is generating already. Amazing.

I love it to death. This whole thing has just been so much fun. :D

Either way, the monster's mouth wasn't that pointy and it's neck wasn't that thick XD. The arms came out near the head, so unless they'd been completely severed, they'd be in the photo. Whatever it is, it's not our monster - maybe it's a mature one (since the one in the movie is supposed to be a baby) or some other creature?
XD This reminds me of that "What's the Lost monster?" stuff, only better.
