Ever had one of those moments where you just stare at the number of things that need to get done in a very short amount of time and realize you're just screwed?

Welcome to Monday night dinner shift at On the Border.

Tonight, for whatever reason, somebody was doing some charity event where On the Border would match the amount of money people spent on food or something. I'm not entirely sure what it was, only that I was supposed to be collecting these multicolored papers from tables and writing the total before tax on them before turning them in when I clocked out. Okay, cool.

We were swamped.

I think the high/low/ohGodohGodwe'reallgonnadie point of the evening was when I had either four or five tables. One needed two brownie sundaes (which we make ourselves) and their check, another needed a drink from the bar that I hadn't rung in yet, one needed a to-go burrito that hadn't to-gone yet, and one was *still* waiting for their food.

That was my "screwed" moment.

Strangely enough, I managed to get through all of them. The last table had a nineteen minute ticket time. It was a two top.

It should not have taken nineteen minutes to make one beef Macho Burrito and a chicken sizzling salad. Should. Not.

Which is to say the kitchen, while performing admirably, was incredibly backed up too. Almost every table in the house was filled tonight, and I don't think anybody got to breathe between the hours of five-thirty and eight p.m.

But I walked away from it with nearly forty dollars in tips and the assurance of my section partner that I did just fine tonight, I just needed to calm down, panicking doesn't help.

I run on panic. This should probably change soon. XD

The really funny part of this is, this is the second week in a row I've been told that we're just not busy on Monday nights. This is also the second week in a row that we've been slammed within thirty minutes of people telling me that.

Thank you, Murphy. We get it now. No, really.

And my next Monday shift? Lunch next week. Memorial Day. XD

That was totally last semester for me. I know how you feel, although it was a bit more stretched out than what you had to deal with.

...and your cut text reminds me of "The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything" song... "Hey! We're supposed to sing about piratey things!"

...don't ask...
