Earlier on, I asked if anybody would beinterested in taking a survey that would help me write my Rhetoric paper. Basically, this is that survey. Please answer any and all sections that apply to you and answer them fully and to the best of your ability; you can either leave a comment here or email your answers to fixingthefrog [AT] comcast [DOT] net. Thanks for helping me out. ♥

1. Why did you choose your username? Does it reflect on your real name/identity? If so, how? I picked it many years ago when I first made my account. I thought it would be a cool picture, to see a raven perched on a sunflower. It really has no reflection to me. :3
2. How much personal information do you put on your profile? Do you exclude anything? Why or why not? I used to have the whole song and dance in my profile, but now I took it out. People who I didn't want reading kept finding my journal.
3. Have you ever uploaded any pictures of yourself? Do you believe your icons are an accurate representation of you? Why or why not? Yes, I have. They are pretty accurate, considering they are either me in cosplay or animes/video games I'm rather fond of at the moment.
4. What is your default privacy filter? Why? Friends Only, because people kept reading my journal that I didn't want to.
5. Do you ever lock entries to specific people or specific filters? Why or why not? If so, what type of content goes into these locked entries (details need not be provided if you're not comfortable with that)? Usually gift topics, if I'm buying for someone. I used to lock my relationship problems with my ex from him, too.
6. Do you ever post or comment anonymously? If so, how often? Why or why not? (A secret submitted to a secret community is, for the purposes of this survey, counted as an anonymous post.) Secret communities on occasion, otherwise I do not since most of my friends have anonymous comments blocked.
7. Do you speak differently while anonymous than you do while logged in? If so, how? Examples are appreciated. Since I don't, this is N/A.
8. Do you speak differently to someone who is anonymous than you do to someone who is logged in? If so, how? Examples are appreciated. While I can't think of any examples off hand, usually people who post anonymously are jerks. Occasionally I'll interject.
9. How do you handle not knowing who exactly your audience is? Does it bother you? Does it affect how you speak or what you say? If so, how? Not really. I try to remain consistent, and at least with keeping my journal locked, I have some control over who sees it.

1. Do you use a username? If so, does it reflect on your real name/identity? If so, how? I rarely post, but when I do it's under 'Anonymous'.
2. Do you ever post anonymously (without a username)? If so, how often? Once in a blue moon. Usually I just go there to laugh at the stupid.
3. Do you speak differently anonymously than you do while functioning under a username? If so, how? Examples are appreciated. Not really, but I'm more or less up with the 'lingo', so I understand it.
4. Does the lack of set accounts bother you? If so, why? No, because that's what 4chan is all about.
5. How do you handle not knowing who exactly your audience is? Does it bother you? Does it affect how you speak or what you say? If so, how? You can pretty much be an ass or be entirely honest, and either way nobody is going to take you seriously so it doesn't matter.

Facebook
1. How much information do you put on your profile? Do you exclude anything? Why or why not? I started out putting everything about me on Facebook, including my typical haunts on the internet, all of my obscurest fandoms, et cetera. After a while, I decided that I would use Facebook more for real-life interaction and trimmed down on the nerdier of my interests.
2. Do you upload pictures? Is your profile picture of you (as opposed to a fictional character or a generic image)? Why or why not? I don't tend to upload pictures, mostly because I don't take many pictures. My profile picture is of me. Again, this is because I see Facebook as a place for real-life interaction.
3. What is your default privacy filter (private, public, friends only, etc). Why? Most of my information is only available to my networks and friends. I have some sensitive information on there, like my phone number and personal email address, that I'd rather not just anyone be able to see.
4. Do you ever lock entries to specific people or specific filters? Why or why not? If so, what type of content goes into these locked entries (details need not be provided if you're not comfortable with that)? I don't use Facebook as a blog, so I don't ever really post to it.
5. Does the lack of anonymous posting/the ability to post anonymously ever bother you? Would you prefer an anonymous option on Facebook? Why or why not? There are applications that allow anonymous posting in specific settings, but it's never particularly bothered me. I barely post anonymously even when I have the option. I don't feel it's necessary in a social networking environment where people are supposed to know who they're talking to.

1. Why did you choose your username? Does it reflect on your real name/identity? If so, how? It was an alias I used in my junior year of high school, which was also when I got this journal. It barely means anything and bears no relation to my actual name.
2. How much personal information do you put on your profile? Do you exclude anything? Why or why not? I put my first name, some basic personal and contact information, and most of my fandom-related interests in my LiveJournal. I tend to include more of the things that the people I meet online would be interested in, rather than what my real-life friends would be interested in.
3. Have you ever uploaded any pictures of yourself? Do you believe your icons are an accurate representation of you? Why or why not? I've used a picture of myself as an icon once, but it barely lasted. I prefer to use my icons to express my interests, since I can feel like I can more easily participate in fandom discussions. My icons aren't an accurate representation of me, since I'm not defined only by what I'm interested in, but they are an accurate representation of my interests.
4. What is your default privacy filter? Why? My entries are mostly friends-only. I use LiveJournal as a journal, first and foremost; I talk about some very personal things on my journal that I don't want everyone being able to see.
5. Do you ever lock entries to specific people or specific filters? Why or why not? If so, what type of content goes into these locked entries (details need not be provided if you're not comfortable with that)? I rarely use filters; the only time I did was when I needed to vent about my roommate, who happened to be on my LiveJournal friends list. By and large, I don't see the point of filters.
6. Do you ever post or comment anonymously? If so, how often? Why or why not? (A secret submitted to a secret community is, for the purposes of this survey, counted as an anonymous post.) The only time I post anonymously is in secret communities, though I rarely, if ever, take those too seriously. Secret communities are just another way to generate discussion.
7. Do you speak differently while anonymous than you do while logged in? If so, how? Examples are appreciated. I tend to type only in lowercase, for some reason. It makes my words seem less authentic.
8. Do you speak differently to someone who is anonymous than you do to someone who is logged in? If so, how? Examples are appreciated. I don't speak to people anonymously; I prefer to say things to people's faces.
9. How do you handle not knowing who exactly your audience is? Does it bother you? Does it affect how you speak or what you say? If so, how? Another reason I keep my journal friends-only is so I can get to know people through other means (AIM conversations and the like) before I let them see my entries. I may not know exactly who my audience is, but I know enough about them to trust them; once it gets to that point, it doesn't bother me. Now that I don't live with the roommate who necessitated filtering, I never censor myself on my own journal, regardless of my audience.

1. It's the same name as my IM, and the same name I used in a few different places. XD; It's actually a character from a comic that me and
2. I put a general summary of my personal self, but nothing really specific like my real life address or phone number. I don't think I have my email listed, actually? Just enough for people to get an idea of me.
3. I've uploaded pictures of myself once, but it was awhile ago and may or may not have been under flock. I think my icons are mostly an accurate representation of my fandoms. XD; I've only got six, so there's not much room for variety, and I tend to pick KH ones because it's my main fandom.
4. Public. I don't often put things under flock, usually because I don't post anything really sensetive. I don't emo a lot in my journal, and usually the stuff I flock is stuff I don't want the general public to know.
5. I can't remember the last time I used a specific filter, even though I made them...I usually either make things public or friends-only. I think the stuff I flock or filter most often has to do with KHFFR, and it's usually only flocked because I trust the people on my flist to a) not care, or b) not go spreading around all over the place.
6. I almost never post anonymously. I've done it maybe...once or twice? And I posted a secret to a secret comm once. Going anon makes me feel really uncomfortable for some reason. I guess I'm afraid that someone will recognize my writing or know it's me even if I go anon, which defeats the purpose. I just really prefer attaching my name to what I say.
7. Since I almost never do it, I don't really know if I speak differently or not.
8. Heh, ironically, I almost never respond to anonymous, either. Anon commenting is turned off in my journal, and I mainly only see anon comments in secret comms, in which case...I ignore them. I guess I subconsciously see an anon comment as being less worthy of a response from me, or I'm less able to take it seriously. Emotionally anon comments might affect me, but rationally they somehow become less important.
9. I assume that my audience is the people on my flist, so it always throws me for a little bit of a loop when someone I don't know responds. When I post in communities, I know my audience is larger, so I'm a little more self-conscious about what I say. But all in all, it doesn't bother me. I figure as long as I speak rationally and sensibly, any potential audience shouldn't get too bent out of shape.

Because I'm an Aladdin nerd for one, and because I feel a lot like Prince Ali. This great spectacle that everyone thinks is so awesome and great but really doesn't know what the hell they're doing; I'm making it up as I go along xD. It doesn't reflect my real name or identity, but if you know I like Aladdin it does? It's hard to explain
2. How much personal information do you put on your profile? Do you exclude anything? Why or why not?
Not too much. I movedaround a lot by the time I got my journal, so I didn't put in my location out of laziness. My age is there, though, so people know about the age range they're going to be dealing with. A 12 year old's journal is gonna be different from a 22 year old's journal XD. And people know my real name through my journal, so yeah.
3. Have you ever uploaded any pictures of yourself? Do you believe your icons are an accurate representation of you? Why or why not?
Yep, yep, yep! Vacation photos, mostly and the ocassional joke photo. And yes, I think my icons represent me. I'm a "seasoned Disney fan" as someone has called me, so I can have a serious icon and then turn around and have a completely cracktastical/R rated one xD. I tend to kind of be like that myself, so I think they represent me.
4. What is your default privacy filter? Why?
I have no filters!
5. Do you ever lock entries to specific people or specific filters? Why or why not? If so, what type of content goes into these locked entries (details need not be provided if you're not comfortable with that)?
I've locked maybe like...2 posts? One was so people could talk freely without people from another community coming and bitching at them since it was a wanky topic, and the other one was because I had anonymous commenters to me saying I was too intimidating to reveal themselves so I was like ";____; WTF REALLY GUYS?!?! BE HONEST." I noticed people are a lot more honest when they know who is going to see their comment is limited. But I have no filters or lock posts so only certain people see them. If it's locked to my friends, then it's locked to all my friends.
6. Do you ever post or comment anonymously? If so, how often? Why or why not? (A secret submitted to a secret community is, for the purposes of this survey, counted as an anonymous post.)
No, never. I hate doing things anonymously because if it's really something I need to get off my chest, I'm just going to say it no matter where I'm at. I have no need to hide behind a wall and scream what I want to say, so I have no reason to go anonymously. And even when I have been anonymous in anonymous only set posts like in people's journals, the person ALWAYS knows it's me because I make it that obvious with something silly XD
7. Do you speak differently while anonymous than you do while logged in? If so, how? Examples are appreciated.
Nope; Like I said above, if I am anonymous, you CLEARLY know it's me xD. A friend did a "ask me a question" meme anonymously and I posted a picture of Aladdin going "DO YOU TRUST ME?" xD
8. Do you speak differently to someone who is anonymous than you do to someone who is logged in? If so, how? Examples are appreciated.
No, not really. It would be NICE to know who that person IS, but I talk to them like a person since I'm assuming that's who is on the other end typing up the comment.
9. How do you handle not knowing who exactly your audience is? Does it bother you? Does it affect how you speak or what you say? If so, how?
I really try to stay mutual for everyone, but the most important thing is that I'm completely honest and upfront about who I am so they know who they're friending and what my posts are like ahead of time. That's why my journal isn't locked so they can see who they're dealing with. Chances are if you've friended me, you like the person I am and who you've seen, so I'm going to honor that. I treat everyone equally while keeping a sense of awareness about how I talk and who I'm talking to so that hopefully they do the same with me.

It stands for The Artist Formerly Known As Ed, the Ed in question being ripped off from Cowboy Bebop. It reflects mainly that I was quite the weeaboo in my early days on the internet, and that I am by now used to having that same name everywhere.
2. How much personal information do you put on your profile? Do you exclude anything? Why or why not?
Let's see... as far as personal information goes, my profile lists my age, sex, and what state I live in. My real name isn't listed there, but I don't go out of my way to hide it from people these days. I mean, I did when I was 12, but it's one of those things that only 12-year-olds do anymore.
3. Have you ever uploaded any pictures of yourself? Do you believe your icons are an accurate representation of you? Why or why not?
Occasionally. And of course my icons aren't accurate representations of me. The majority of them are hot guys from video games, and I am neither a guy, nor hot, nor hailing from chocobo land.
4. What is your default privacy filter? Why?
By default, I set almost everything to Friends, and have been doing so for years. There was this incident where I bitched about my roommate's taste in music in a public entry, without realizing that (although she only had a Xanga) she did, in fact, read my Livejournal. Since then, I've kept everything flocked. Apparently my parents drop in every so often to see what I've been saying
about them, too, so it's important.5. Do you ever lock entries to specific people or specific filters? Why or why not? If so, what type of content goes into these locked entries (details need not be provided if you're not comfortable with that)?
I find custom filters kind of annoying to use, actually, so I don't often bother with them. The few times I have, it's been because I didn't want to go about angsting at everyone.
6. Do you ever post or comment anonymously? If so, how often? Why or why not? (A secret submitted to a secret community is, for the purposes of this survey, counted as an anonymous post.)
Once in a blue moon. Generally I believe that candidness is the best policy and the only way to get problems actually solved, but I post anon when I just want to act like a total bitch without taking any long-term flak for it.
7. Do you speak differently while anonymous than you do while logged in? If so, how? Examples are appreciated.
Well, let's see. First, I'm usually not posting anon unless I'm upset or bitter about something to begin with, so the tone of my posts can wind up a lot more biting than usual (though I try not to act openly cruel). Second, to avoid being traced, I've sometimes let my punctuation and grammar slip, but other times I still use it correctly. Thirdly, if I post anon to somebody I know, I act like I don't know them, to throw them off my trail. Since, after all, it's an attempt to avoid long-term flak.
8. Do you speak differently to someone who is anonymous than you do to someone who is logged in? If so, how? Examples are appreciated.
I don't usually reply to anons at all, actually. I find from watching them that they're pretty vicious when provoked. If I do reply, it's with the caution usually reserved for defusing bombs.
9. How do you handle not knowing who exactly your audience is? Does it bother you? Does it affect how you speak or what you say? If so, how?
Oh, I think it's worse when I do know exactly who my audience is. The more I know about someone, the harder it is to talk with them. It's like breaking the ice and then having to walk on it. Then again, strangers aren't super easy to talk to either. It's weird when someone I don't know comments to me, but that doesn't happen often since I'm friends only.

this is Mel under an RP journal ^^;
1. I have a fair amount of information on my profile, mostly contact and music interests. I leave out most of the relationship stuff because, frankly, I don't think it's anyone's business unless I specifically bring it up with them.
2. I only have one image, which is of me, and purely for identification purposes for people who know me.
3. Friends only, because I don't want anyone who can get online looking at my personal information.
4. I don't really have anything on there that I keep locked to certain people, aside from the general friends-only thing, because I don't use it all that often.
5. It doesn't bother me, and I wouldn't want to allow it, because things like Facebook are far more connected to real life identities and therefore are easier targets for serious harassment.

1. My name is a play on the word "meow", warped quite a bit. It doesn't really reflect my real name at all.
2. I have a nickname, age, and some birthday information on there, but otherwise I keep personal info off because there's no way to lock it.
3. I don't use personal pictures as icons because it just seems weird to do so on Livejournal. I think the culture of this site discourages it. Also, I don't like putting my photo all over the web.
4. My default is public, because I mostly use my journal for RP/fandom stuff and silly memes.
5. All of my entries about my personal life go under flock, as well as anything I just don't want everyone to know about (when I'm complaining, that's generally flocked). I do have a filter, but it's just one that keeps my sister out of certain posts.
6. I've occasionally posted anonymously, to anonymous RP memes and to RPS, because I don't handle direct confrontation very well and fear that people will dislike me if I criticize things.
7. Not really--I remain polite and generally try to remember there is an actual person on the other side of the computer screen. I do think I'm more blunt, though: I feel more comfortable just going ahead and saying what an issue is anonymously, whereas I'm more likely to hint at it when I'm not anonymous.
8. I don't speak any differently to mice.
9. It doesn't really bother me because I spend so much time online, I think. I'm just used to knowing that there is the chance that I won't know who's reading this stuff, and that's why I tend to be more shallowly cheerful when I'm around people I don't know, or in public posts. Flocked, I'm far more honest.

1. Why did you choose your username? Does it reflect on your real name/identity? If so, how?
Uuuh when I created the journal (BACK IN '02) my username for basically everything was either 'ormsqueak' or 'squeakyorm'. I don't really remember why. And ... uh, yeah, it still is. My username does not have an exciting origin story :C
2. How much personal information do you put on your profile? Do you exclude anything? Why or why not?
Just my nickname, interests, vague location and vague employment. I figure anything else would be superfluous? idk.
3. Have you ever uploaded any pictures of yourself? Do you believe your icons are an accurate representation of you? Why or why not?
I've had icons on LJ that are of me before, but I don't any more. No real reason, I just didn't like them as much as other icons. I don't think my icons represent me so much as my interest or fandoms or what I find funny.
4. What is your default privacy filter? Why?
Public, because I don't really ever say anything that I'm concerned about ~falling into the wrong hands~ or whatever. I'll flock something if I'm worried about that sort of thing but it doesn't happen often.
5. Do you ever lock entries to specific people or specific filters? Why or why not? If so, what type of content goes into these locked entries (details need not be provided if you're not comfortable with that)?
I don't have filters. I'll flock a post if it has to do with ~PERSONAL ANGST~ that I think people who've watched me who I haven't watched back don't really need or want to see, or if it has much anything to do with publishing/my agent – mostly out of a sort of paranoia that my agent is somehow going to find me on the internet and then be all WHAT, YOU ARE BEING FAR TOO OPTIMISTIC AND WE DO NOT LIKE YOU AT ALL!! >(
6. Do you ever post or comment anonymously? If so, how often? Why or why not? (A secret submitted to a secret community is, for the purposes of this survey, counted as an anonymous post.)
I post secrets now and then, because it's fun, and if I'm going to comment to an anonmeme I'll do it anonymously, but not for the purposes of bitching about people. If a complaint isn't worth making to someone's face then I don't think it's worth making publicly. If I'm anonymous it'll be because I want to cheer someone up with a positive secret, or because I want to express an opinion but don't want to be associated with it by everyone who might potentially see it, either because it's embarrassing or because I don't want people to consider what I'm saying in light of any bias they might have associated with me.
7. Do you speak differently while anonymous than you do while logged in? If so, how? Examples are appreciated.
Ahaha, if I reaaally don't want anyone to know it's me, I Americanise my spellings – take out a few Us, swap some Ss for Zs. I know I'm not the ONLY BRITISH PERSON ON THE INTERNET, but I know I'm the first one a fair few of my American friends think of.
8. Do you speak differently to someone who is anonymous than you do to someone who is logged in? If so, how? Examples are appreciated.
Only in the sense that I speak a little differently depending on who I'm talking to in general. With anonymous it depends entirely on the tone they take with me because there's no way I can make them less of a stranger by poking around their profile or taking their username or icons into account.
9. How do you handle not knowing who exactly your audience is? Does it bother you? Does it affect how you speak or what you say? If so, how?
I usually assume if I'm posting to my LJ then it's only going to be my flist who comments – I get proven wrong pretty often because apparently I have stalkers who are too shy to watch me or something – but it usually startles me every time it happens. It doesn't bother me, though, because I'm pretty much used to posting stuff where anyone and everyone, or at least a wide audience of people, can see it.

1. How much information do you put on your profile? Do you exclude anything? Why or why not?
I actually fill out my profile completely. I'm kind of OCD about things being complete.
2. Do you upload pictures? Is your profile picture of you (as opposed to a fictional character or a generic image)? Why or why not?
I do... I upload SO many pictures. And yes, my profile picture is of me... ^_^ ummm why do I do it? So people recognize me?
3. What is your default privacy filter (private, public, friends only, etc). Why?
Friends only. I do have personal things on there and don't want any stalkers.

I don't really post things on my Facebook.

No, because I never use the anonymous option on other things anyways.

1. Why did you choose your username? Does it reflect on your real name/identity? If so, how?
This was originally a character journal, but that game died and I wanted a regular journal. This is an original character I've had for a very long time.
2. How much personal information do you put on your profile? Do you exclude anything? Why or why not?
I don't exclude anything intentionally. I put as much as I can think of, really. Like I said, I'm a nut about completion.
3. Have you ever uploaded any pictures of yourself? Do you believe your icons are an accurate representation of you? Why or why not?
Yes, I constantly link to pictures of myself. And my icons... I try to pick ones that include characters I really click with. I would say they're all a fair representation of me.
4. What is your default privacy filter? Why?
Friends only. I don't want stalkers and I don't want the world knowing my problems.
5. Do you ever lock entries to specific people or specific filters? Why or why not? If so, what type of content goes into these locked entries (details need not be provided if you're not comfortable with that)?
I do. If it's something only certain people know about or if I'm having problems and only want certain people to know about it...
6. Do you ever post or comment anonymously? If so, how often? Why or why not? (A secret submitted to a secret community is, for the purposes of this survey, counted as an anonymous post.)
Extreeeeeeemely rarely.
7. Do you speak differently while anonymous than you do while logged in? If so, how? Examples are appreciated.
No.
8. Do you speak differently to someone who is anonymous than you do to someone who is logged in? If so, how? Examples are appreciated.
I might be more cautious in what I say... but not really.
9. How do you handle not knowing who exactly your audience is? Does it bother you? Does it affect how you speak or what you say? If so, how?
It does bother me... I'm waaay more cautious with what I say and might even leave out details on things if I'm not sure who's reading it/how they'll react.
Aaaand, I don't use 4chan.

1. Why did you choose your username? Does it reflect on your real name/identity? If so, how?
Kaser is a composite of my first and last name so it reflects my real name/identity fairly well, while still retaining a vast level of anonymity...the buchou is because Kaser itself was taken and bouchou means captain or president which I was for the anime club at one point.
2. How much personal information do you put on your profile? Do you exclude anything? Why or why not?
I think I mostly just posted my interests on my profile and nothing else...I don't really want random internet strangers learning too much about me.
3. Have you ever uploaded any pictures of yourself? Do you believe your icons are an accurate representation of you? Why or why not?
I never upload picture of me the closest I come is the icon of a drawing of myself in anime form. That icon is something of a representation of me though certainly more elegant than I am myself...the rest are more moods or mildly related to things I talk about so they don't necessarily represtent me directly.
4. What is your default privacy filter? Why?
Having no idea how to change it if such a thing is possible, my default privacy filter is public but I f-lock almost all entries by hand except those with no information relating to my personal life. The reason for this being that nobody who doesn't know me needs to be reading about me and I'll freind everyone I know with a lj.
5. Do you ever lock entries to specific people or specific filters? Why or why not? If so, what type of content goes into these locked entries (details need not be provided if you're not comfortable with that)?
I don't think I even know how to do that. Honestly I don't spend a lot of time exploring lj or reading news posts...
6. Do you ever post or comment anonymously? If so, how often? Why or why not? (A secret submitted to a secret community is, for the purposes of this survey, counted as an anonymous post.)
I don't think I've ever posted anonymously, it seems cheap and cowardly to me and in general if I'm not willing to say it with my name attatched then either it doesn't need to be said that badly or I don't believe in it strongly enough for it to really matter.
7. Do you speak differently while anonymous than you do while logged in? If so, how? Examples are appreciated.
Sort of goes back to the above.
8. Do you speak differently to someone who is anonymous than you do to someone who is logged in? If so, how? Examples are appreciated.
I don't think I've ever spoken with an anonymous but I think I'd be more likely to speak harshly to them because they weren't willing to put their name to their oppinion.
9. How do you handle not knowing who exactly your audience is? Does it bother you? Does it affect how you speak or what you say? If so, how?
Generally I treat lj as if I have not audience and am simply notifying myself of my life. I do edit certain thoughts and feelings that I wouldn't want friends to happen upon and be offended by if I believe they are likely to offend. But otherwise I don't really concern myself too much with the audience because I don't have to please them, they're choosing to read.

1. How much information do you put on your profile? Do you exclude anything? Why or why not? Almost all of my information is on Facebook, since I only add people I've met personally and/or know well. I feel safe enough to have everything on there, since no one else can see it - besides, none of it is really incriminating or dangerous, IMO.
2. Do you upload pictures? Is your profile picture of you (as opposed to a fictional character or a generic image)? Why or why not? My profile picture is me and I do upload things, but generally only when there are people in it (like, no scenery shots, etc). I don't know why. I like photos, I like looking at photos. I think they're fun and a great insight to someone else's life, so I figure if I look at everyone else's photos to see who they are, why should I deny them the right to do the same to me?
3. What is your default privacy filter (private, public, friends only, etc). Why? Friends only, because I have been Creeped Out By The Internet before, and don't want it to happen again.
4. Do you ever lock entries to specific people or specific filters? Why or why not? If so, what type of content goes into these locked entries (details need not be provided if you're not comfortable with that)? Not on Facebook, no. I just sort of let it all hang out.
5. Does the lack of anonymous posting/the ability to post anonymously ever bother you? Would you prefer an anonymous option on Facebook? Why or why not? I would actually like an anonymous option, even though I like the lack of one now - it's admittedly for selfish purposes and is a bit hypocritical of me. I wouldn't want anyone anonymously commenting on how they really feel about me, good or bad, but I want the ability to do that to them.

1. Why did you choose your username? Does it reflect on your real name/identity? If so, how? It doesn't actually reflect anything about me, other than that I like to read - I picked the name randomly out of Les Mis when I was reading it a couple years back.
2. How much personal information do you put on your profile? Do you exclude anything? Why or why not? More or less none. I trust LJ a lot less than I trust Facebook, and don't really like to give out personal info beyond the basics.
3. Have you ever uploaded any pictures of yourself? Do you believe your icons are an accurate representation of you? Why or why not? I only upload pictures on friends-locked entries. I believe my icons are an adequate representation of my interests and, occasionally, my internet-inspired moods, but not really a representation of me
4. What is your default privacy filter? Why? Friends-only, because there's a lot of stuff I don't want non-friend-approved people reading.
5. Do you ever lock entries to specific people or specific filters? Why or why not? If so, what type of content goes into these locked entries (details need not be provided if you're not comfortable with that)? I've only used a private entry once, and that was to whine about my life. A lot. It's a little embarrassing, and I haven't done it since - it feels way too self-indulgent.
6. Do you ever post or comment anonymously? If so, how often? Why or why not? (A secret submitted to a secret community is, for the purposes of this survey, counted as an anonymous post.) Only when it's required/suggested by the rules, or when I forget to log in. I don't like being anonymous all the time.
7. Do you speak differently while anonymous than you do while logged in? If so, how? Examples are appreciated. So far I haven't really been in a situation on LJ where I used the anonymous comment to voice my opinion, rather than to just post a prompt or a secret, unless I forget to log in, in which case I speak like I think I've logged in.

8. Do you speak differently to someone who is anonymous than you do to someone who is logged in? If so, how? Examples are appreciated. Yeah. I tend to be a little nasty towards and leery of anonymous people - I feel like they're just trying to escape any blame for what they say.
9. How do you handle not knowing who exactly your audience is? Does it bother you? Does it affect how you speak or what you say? If so, how? It bugs me a little tiny bit. I trust pretty much everyone on my friends list but it does occur to me that they could be totally making up their own identities. I also tend to be more cautious about what I say in a political/social sense, because I can't really get a feel of the room and don't know if what I say will incite a fight.
4chan
1. Do you use a username? If so, does it reflect on your real name/identity? If so, how? I don't use one.
2. Do you ever post anonymously (without a username)? If so, how often? I do occasionally post on/scroll through /b/, but the posts are very, very few and far between - only like one or two the whole time I've been there.
3. Do you speak differently anonymously than you do while functioning under a username? If so, how? Examples are appreciated. Yeah. I tend to be a little more outspoken than usual and can be a little meaner towards people, because they have no idea what kind of person I am. I also feel freer to talk about certain things that I would never talk about to people in real life.
4. Does the lack of set accounts bother you? If so, why? Not really, I feel like it's more or less the nature of the boards to be an anonymous cesspool.
5. How do you handle not knowing who exactly your audience is? Does it bother you? Does it affect how you speak or what you say? If so, how? Not on 4chan - most of the time, I admittedly tend to tell myself that I'm smarter than them, and can handle getting down to their level. I never really worry about what they think of me specifically, because there are always worse people.
Hope this helps - I'll try to get the 4chan portion to my brother, can't make too many promises though.

1. How much information do you put on your profile? Do you exclude anything? Why or why not?
Enough? I just let people know what my interests are and stuff. I don't list my religious or
2. Do you upload pictures? Is your profile picture of you (as opposed to a fictional character or a generic image)? Why or why not?
Yeah, I do. My pic is of me for recognition purposes. I figure facebook is a place for RL friends or, at least, online friends that you trust enough to let onto your facebook so I don't see the logic in/the entrancing charm of putting up a pic that isn't you.
3. What is your default privacy filter (private, public, friends only, etc). Why?
Friends only. The reason is that I'm super lame and am too lazy to seek out people to friend, and my brain says people are more likely to friend me if my profile is locked anyway haha
4. Do you ever lock entries to specific people or specific filters? Why or why not? If so, what type of content goes into these locked entries (details need not be provided if you're not comfortable with that)?
No?
5. Does the lack of anonymous posting/the ability to post anonymously ever bother you? Would you prefer an anonymous option on Facebook? Why or why not?
I don't see why you'd have to be anonymous on Facebook. I mean, there are honesty boxes and weird apps like that, but personally I don't care. If something is annoying enough to make you want to tell people, I'd do it face to face. Not anon.

1. Why did you choose your username? Does it reflect on your real name/identity? If so, how?
My username is based on a location in FFXII. It reflects upon my superb nerdy-ness.
2. How much personal information do you put on your profile? Do you exclude anything? Why or why not?
There is pretty much no personal info on my profile, other than ways to contact me and links to icons I've made and all that. I don't know who's looking at my profile anyway (plus if they're creepy then fff, there you go not gonna give them the info) and I figure that if someone's on my journal reading my entries they probably know who I am already.
3. Have you ever uploaded any pictures of yourself? Do you believe your icons are an accurate representation of you? Why or why not?
I have, once or twice. I don't do it often though because it's inconvenient but it's fun to do sometimes, haha. My icons are just pics that I like so I don't think they represent me, though I guess they can represent what I think is... funny.
4. What is your default privacy filter? Why?
Default is public. I have nothing to say that is so personal or ~*~*~*SUPER SECRET*~*~*~ for me to need to f-lock.
5. Do you ever lock entries to specific people or specific filters? Why or why not? If so, what type of content goes into these locked entries (details need not be provided if you're not comfortable with that)?
I have done this once or twice. The time I remember it was when I was talking about something about family issues (something the public didn't need to see).
6. Do you ever post or comment anonymously? If so, how often? Why or why not? (A secret submitted to a secret community is, for the purposes of this survey, counted as an anonymous post.)
I've submitted one secret before, but it was in the praise of an rp community. Everyone seems to like praise and praise seems to be magnified by like a millionfold when you post a secret about it, so there you go. Otherwise, I don't do this.
7. Do you speak differently while anonymous than you do while logged in? If so, how? Examples are appreciated.
I made a point not to say phrases that I toss around frequently, so as not to be pinpointed.
8. Do you speak differently to someone who is anonymous than you do to someone who is logged in? If so, how? Examples are appreciated.
I don't really converse with the anon :(
9. How do you handle not knowing who exactly your audience is? Does it bother you? Does it affect how you speak or what you say? If so, how?
It generally doesn't bother me, but I believe that subconsciously I make a point not to sound so bitchy 8|

6. Do you ever post or comment anonymously? If so, how often? Why or why not? (A secret submitted to a secret community is, for the purposes of this survey, counted as an anonymous post.) I only post anonymously if it's in the instructions of a meme to do so.

1. I have complete contact information on my profile, and I think I've filled all the "List your favorite _______" sections rather extensively. I do not exclude anything because the only people who can see my profile are people I know, and I have nothing to hide from them.
2. I have a fair amount of pictures uploaded, but they are pictures I like my friends able to access. My profile picture is actually a picture of me because (1) I do not like the lack of an image there and (2) I think it's illegal to put a copyrighted picture in that spot (so no anime/video game/fictional characters for me).
3. My default privacy filter is friends only, but I changed the settings so that you can't find me in a search of the site. I did this because people whom I do not know do not need to see the information I have there for the benefit of my friends.
4. I actually do not use the not system on Facebook--that's what my LJ is for.
5. I have never been bothered by the lack of an anonymous posting option, but I rarely, if ever, post messages to groups. Even if I did, though, I do not have anything to say that would need to be said anonymously.

1. My username actually came from a creature I had on Neopets back in ninth grade. It was very difficult to come up with a name on that site that wasn't already taken, so I came up with rlartari, which I thought looked neat and reminded me of my favorite color, blue. When I registered for a Livejournal, I wasn't playing on Neopets anymore, and so didn't remember the name quite right. Thus rlartari became rlaltari. I continue to use it for most of my forum names because it is NEVER taken.
2. My profile is really devoid of anything other than msn and skype usernames. I've never felt the need to fill it out.
3. I have uploaded pictures of myself, though I think all but one is me in cosplay. I think my icons are representative of myself, but it's in a very broad sense. I pick my icons (all three of them) to match my journal colors/theme, which is what I really use to represent myself. But I typically only use one icon for all my entries anyway, since I don't have any others that match well.
4. My default privacy filter was everyone for a while, but after I ceased to be friends with someone who read my Livejournal, I changed it to friends only private so they could not keep tabs on my life.
5. Right now, all of my entries are marked as private for reasons stated in my answer to 4. But these entries cover everything from memes to very personal experiences.
6. I never post or comment anonymously, but I only ever comment to the journals of my friends. I do not have anything to say to them that I could not say to their faces.
7. n/a
8. I think I've had an anonymous comment on my journal all of once, and I was very curt with him; but that's because he was rude.
9. I know exactly who my audience is, so this doesn't apply to me. But even when I posted public, it never bothered me because I was writing for myself more than for anyone else, even friends.

1. How much information do you put on your profile? Do you exclude anything? Why or why not?
I suppose the most I exclude is my exact address, otherwise I've got my name, town, school... I guess I'm not a highly private person XD;
2. Do you upload pictures? Is your profile picture of you (as opposed to a fictional character or a generic image)? Why or why not?
I do! On rare occasions, at least. It's... fun I suppose :O Er. Hmm. I guess I like seeing what my other friends are doing, so maybe it's the same for them? ... lol generally what I have on it is LARP and Ren Faire pictures. Oh! And places~
3. What is your default privacy filter (private, public, friends only, etc). Why?
Public. Because I don't really care. >>;
4. Do you ever lock entries to specific people or specific filters? Why or why not? If so, what type of content goes into these locked entries (details need not be provided if you're not comfortable with that)?
I don't... do entries :D;
5. Does the lack of anonymous posting/the ability to post anonymously ever bother you? Would you prefer an anonymous option on Facebook? Why or why not?
It doesn't really bother me. What bothers me is that high schoolers and such can use it now... I suppose maybe they should be anonymous for like their own safety or something I think, since they can be young and stupid. Hum...
did that even answer the questionLiveJournal
1. Why did you choose your username? Does it reflect on your real name/identity? If so, how?
I wanted to choose ShadowSpirit, since that has been my penname for awhile now (though FFN screwed it up by not allowing double-usernames and I got booted to ShadowSpirits :| rawr). So I default it as being the next best thing, heh.
2. How much personal information do you put on your profile? Do you exclude anything? Why or why not?
I don't put a lot on my profile at all. I've got my first name, my age, my current major, and the state I'm in. That's it. Don't see reason to put a lot more.
3. Have you ever uploaded any pictures of yourself? Do you believe your icons are an accurate representation of you? Why or why not?
I've never uploaded pictures onto LJ. Facebook only. I'm not sure if my icons really represent me. They generally represent my mood and my interests, I suppose. But currently I'm aimed towards George from Dead Like Me for a random whim so... they're themed, I guess.
4. What is your default privacy filter? Why?
Default is public. I only screen to friends-only for like... really in-depth memes or very personal things just because some things I'd prefer to be secretive. Or something.
5. Do you ever lock entries to specific people or specific filters? Why or why not? If so, what type of content goes into these locked entries (details need not be provided if you're not comfortable with that)?
See above, mostly. I don't have specific filter. It's all my friends or everyone, really. I don't private entries on this journal. I'll use something else for that.
6. Do you ever post or comment anonymously? If so, how often? Why or why not? (A secret submitted to a secret community is, for the purposes of this survey, counted as an anonymous post.)
Not really. Most of the time it'll seem... better to post openly. I think I rarely will have a comment that should be done anonymously.
7. Do you speak differently while anonymous than you do while logged in? If so, how? Examples are appreciated.
I don't think I do, which is probably why I don't bother XD
8. Do you speak differently to someone who is anonymous than you do to someone who is logged in? If so, how? Examples are appreciated.
I think I try to pace myself more... or be more patient, careful. I suppose the best way to compare it to is talking as a mod :O
9. How do you handle not knowing who exactly your audience is? Does it bother you? Does it affect how you speak or what you say? If so, how?
... I don't generally care. I think of whose on my friend's list, and if anyone passes by and sees something they don't appreciate... I generally don't care x.x;

1. A moderate amount. Just enough for the random passer-by to get a basic idea of the kinds of things interest me. Most of what I exclude are fandom-related things such as slash, or fanfiction. One, because I don't want to have to explain those things, and two because I really only made it so potential roommates could get a hold of me.
2. The only pictures I uploaded so far have been shots I've taken of flowers and local wildlife, except for my most recent - my current profile picture which is me, although nothing below my eyes is visible. I just don't like people looking at me; I'd rather them see lions or ducks or my fish instead.
3. I think it's public, if only because I'm too lazy to do anything to it. I think "private" would really defeat the purpose of a social networking site, though...
4. ... You can do that? I honestly didn't know. But I don't use facebook as a blog, so I've no need for that anyway.
5. No, and no. It really defeats the purpose of social networking sites.

1. It was a word I found scanning the index of an ancient Egyptian hieroglyphic dictionary. The translation of the word doesn't have a special meaning to me, I just loved the way the letters sounded together. I guess it reflects on me in that I enjoy learning about ancient Egypt.
2. Not much! My interests are more fandom related, but the bio section is less about my personal life and more a place to store color banners and the such.
3. Very rarely! I suppose my icons do represent me. I wouldn't use them if I didn't like what was in them in some way.
4. Friends-only, because I actually use the journal as a journal sometimes, and also because I like some privacy.
5. In the past, yes, but not so much now that I've done a friends cut. Usually the content revolves around my personal life (things I'd want to keep from people I know in my hometown/family) or wanky fandom things that upset a portion of my flist.
6. Rarely, and generally only on memes or secret communities. No specific reason why, although in secret communities, it's more because I'd rather not publicly make my opinion known on some things.
7. It depends on how secretive I'm trying to be. If it's just secret enough for me to be anon, then I won't change my writing habits. If it's a very big secret, I drop certain basic rules of grammar, use less punctuation, change the tone completely (such as being bright and perky and cheerful, or bitter and sarcastic), whatever I think might work to distance it from me so as not to be outed.
8. No, I pretty much treat everyone the same. Unless I'm anonymous as well, then see above for how I write.
9. It doesn't really bother me. I don't see what the big deal is against anonymous users or treating them differently just because they're not logged in. I think that's stupid.
