Merry Christmas!

He was just about asleep. This damn city had been putting hin through too much lately. He was, he believed, entitled to a nap.
And then she came in- “Laha-” –and immediately fell silent. It was all he could do not to sigh – she should’ve known by now that, if he were really asleep, it would take a lot more than her calling his name to wake him up. He could hear her footsteps turn and head for the door. Well, if it had been important enough for her to burst in like that...
“What, Flonne.”
She stopped abruptly and squeaked in surprise, then turned and headed tentatively back towards the bed. “Laharl?”
That was how he knew they were alone (or that Flonne believed they were alone, at least). She never called him that when there was someone else around. “Yeah?”
“What day is it?”
...he hadn’t been expecting that. Blinking sleepily, he hauled himself into a sitting position and looked at her. “What.”
“What day is it?” she tried again.
He gave her another flat look. She’d interrupted his nap for this? “I don’t know. Who cares.”
“Oh.” She paused, and for a second Laharl thought she was done.
“What month is it?”
Okay, evidently not.
“Jeez, Flonne, what’s with all the stupid questions?” Was one nap too much to ask? Really? “I don’t know,” he clarified, just in case she didn’t get it the first time.
“Oh.” She fell silent again, looking down. Laharl was ready to lie down again, but…well, she wasn’t leaving. He gave an exasperated sigh, distractedly rubbing one eye. “What is it.”
Flonne’s outburst had all the characteristics of someone who had been thinking about something a long time and still didn’t have an answer. “B-but if we don’t know what day it is and we don’t know what month it is, how do we know when Christmas is?”
Laharl just stared at her, frozen in mid-eye rub. She’d been worried about that? Finally, he let his hand drop. “I don’t know, Flonne. Make it up.”
“Oh.” She considered this. “Can it be today?”
“Sure,” he said dismissively, rubbing his eye again. “Why not.”
“Okay!”
That sounded like the end of the matter. Laharl shook his head, ready to lie back down, when he realized she’d come to stand next to him. “What, Flonne.”
She smiled. “Merry Christmas, Laharl.” Before he knew what she was doing, she’d leaned forward and kissed him lightly on the cheek, then left, nearly skipping, leaving Laharl frozen wide-eyed on the bed.
What...what?
There was one thing Laharl knew, at least: today was not a day where he’d be getting any sleep.
Merry Christmas!
